To board a transportation means.

Get down – Meaning 1

To cause or make someone feel sad.

To write something on a piece of paper, notebook, etc.

To duck. To move down quickly to avoid contact with an unexpected object.

To clearly state an idea.

Example

To have a good relationship with someone. Similar to the second meaning of go on here listed. 

Example

“Get off” Meanings and Examples

Get off – Meaning 1

To stop touching something or someone. Normally used to give an order. It can also be used as “get something off” in imperative.

Example

Lucy, get off me! You are getting me all covered in makeup.

Lucy, stop touching me! You are getting me all covered in makeup.               

Get those dirty shoes off my rug. Now!

Stop touching my rug with those dirty shoes, now!

Get off – Meaning 2

Used as “To get time off,” this meaning refers to having a free period of time, as in vacations.

Example

After the championship, we got a week off to rest.

Get off – Meaning 3

To leave your workplace once the shift has finished.

Get around – Meaning 1

To go to different places, to travel to many places.

“Get in” Meaning and Examples

Get in – Meaning 1

To arrive at work or at home. The arrival of transportation means is also expressed with “get in.” (Also used as “get into”)

Example

The boss is angry because Mary has been getting in 30 minutes late every day.

The boss is angry because Mary has been arriving 30 minutes late every day.

My mother was worried because I had not gotten in at 9 pm9pm.

My mother was worried because I had not arrived home at 9 pm9pm.

The train is on time and will get in at 4 pm4pm.

Get in – Meaning 2

To be admitted in a school, university, team, etc. (also used as “get into”)

Example

To deliver an assignment.

“Get away” Meaning and Examples

Get away – Meaning 1

To escape from someone or somewhere. To leave work or an appointment.

Example

The police officer had caught the criminal, but he managed to get away by faking a blackout.

My girlfriend works all day, but she normally gets away at lunchtime so that we can eat together.

※ “Getaway” is a noun, which is an informal word for “vacation.” Notice there’s no space between!

Get away – Meaning 2

To go someplace else to distract yourself and change the routine.

Example

When I have a couple of days off, I like to get away to my apartment on the beach and relax.

Used as get away with something, this refers to avoiding any punishment or negative outcome for something.

Example

To begin enjoying something.

To feel affected, hurt, or annoyed by something.

To have just enough of something to do what is needed, live, etc. To manage the situation with what you have.

“Get over” Meaning and Examples

Get over – Meaning 1

To start feeling well after a difficult situation, to recover, to forget your ex-partner and be happy again.

Example

Get out – Meaning 1

To leave, normally used as to get out of. Also used to make someone leave.

Example

To go out. To go to places and have fun.

To pass the call, to be connected by telephone with a person or company.

To return, to go back. To continue doing something.

Get behind – Meaning 1

To fail to do something, to not do enough, to be late or overdue.
